DBG Trier 2022

Program of the Young Professionals in Soil Science during the Annual Meeting 2022: Trier, 03.09 – 09.09.22

Pre-Meeting

Friday (02/09) - Sunday (04/09) - Organisation: Jeroen Zethof, Katrin Schulz, Lilli Zeh

This DBG meeting the YPSS comes with a new activity: the pre-meeting. Especially after the corona years, it will be great to meet each other offline and see all the new and old faces. Starting on Friday (2nd September), we will have dinner at our accommodation, the Jugendherberge Trier (Youth hostel) before enjoying the evening at the riverside of the Moselle. On Saturday we will explore a tributary of the Moselle, the Saar, by canoe and the surrounding of Trier by foot, before we will enjoy a well-deserved dinner in a historical wine cellar in Trier. On Sunday you can join the DBG Soil contest, an excursion, or explore Trier at your own pace.

Exchange Talk: Matthias Rillig – How to network in Science?

Monday (05/09), 12:15h – 13:15h, room B12 - Host: Lydia Pohl

Networking can be one of the most powerful tools for your career development. It can help you to increase the quality of your research, address more complex and interdisciplinary problems within your scientific field, and direct you to open positions or funding opportunities. As an early-career scientist, it is particularly important to build up an impactful network at an early stage. Together with Matthias Rillig (FU Berlin), we will discuss how you can start building up your own network, how you get the most out of conferences, and how social media can help you to expand and maintain your network.

YPSS – Pub evening

Monday (05/09), starting 18:30h, Bitburger Wirtshaus, Kornmarkt 1-3

A casual get-together to end our first day of the annual meeting. A great way to get to know other young researchers, exchange your experiences, and stray from soil science-related topics for a couple of hours. Space is limited – register until 22/8 at bodenkunde [dot] nachwuchsatgmail [dot] com ()

Meet the Editors – how to engage in a changing world of publishing

Tuesday (06/09), 12:15h – 13:15h, room B12 - Host: Steffen Schweizer, Sophie Drexler, Marcus Schiedung, Jeroen Zethof

‘Meet the Editors’ offers the opportunity to gain exclusive insights into the publishing process during an open discussion with editors of internationally renowned journals in soil science and neighbouring disciplines. We will discuss the role of impact factors, the responsibility of reviewers and editors, the expectations toward submissions, and the possibilities to participate in peer-reviewing with the audience and editors of different prominent journals in soil science.

Meet the Professionals – job opportunities in soil science

Wednesday (07/09), 12:15h – 13:15h, room B12 - Host: Svenja Stock, Tina Frank

What are your current career options in soil science and how to start your professional life as an early career soil scientist? ‘Meet the Professionals’ provides the possibility to get to know scopes and representatives of various job areas: spatial and environmental planning, groundwater protection, management of dangerous waste and contaminated sites, and science. Whether you are interested in job application processes, salary expectations, or opportunities to develop and broaden your skills – bring your questions and get first-hand answers from insiders from the field you are interested in.
