Research Associate (PostDoc) in Soil Protection, with a focus on soil water fluxes and soil organic carbon storage in drylands

Duties include teaching and research in the respective department or institute. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications as well as acquire teaching experience. These duties are intended to promote academic achievement. Therefore, at least one-third of set working hours will be made available for the associate’s own academic work.

The postdoc should complement research activities of the Soil Protection working group in the Department Earth System Sciences and is expected to develop a research concept tailored for activities with a short-term (up to three years) and a long-term (up to six years) perspective. The concept should address current and future impacts of global change on soil water fluxes and carbon dynamics in Drylands. The working group is part of the Cluster of Excellence “Climate, Climate Change and Society II,” where we focus on the dynamics of soil functions in Southern African drylands and in (semi)arid regions. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• conducting research in soil science and soil protection with a strong focus on soil hydrology, soil organic carbon dynamics, and soil-water-carbon interactions,
• designing and implementing field, lab, and/or modeling studies, including long-term monitoring of carbon stocks and water fluxes in semi-arid southern Africa, as well as SOM effects on small-scale hydrological processes,
• analysing interactions between hydrological processes, vegetation dynamics, and SOC storage under natural and managed land-use systems,
• publication of research results in international peer-reviewed journals and presentation of findings at international conferences,
• participation in the acquisition and coordination of third-party funded research projects, as well as academic self-administration
• strengthening and expanding international research collaborations, particularly in southern Africa,
• teaching and conducting courses, e.g. seminars or field and laboratory practicals (4 LVS teaching hours per week during the lecture period of a semester). Support and supervision of bachelor's and master's students.

The position offers the opportunity to contribute to the Cluster of Excellence CLICCS II in the role of an Associate Researcher.

PhD position on EcoFuture KAP4- Developing a multi-component fertilizer for future ecological farming

The Department of Soil Biology (Institute of Soil Science and Land Evaluation) at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart (Germany) invites applications for a PhD position on the said position. 

The candidate will work within the Soil Biology Group and in collaboration with the University of Tübingen (Geo-Biosphere Interactions, Hydrogeochemistry) and the Steinbeis-Innovation gGmbH. The successful applicant will investigate the effects of a newly developed multi-component fertilizer on nutrient and carbon dynamics in agricultural soils. The fertilizer consists of nutrient-rich labile components in combination with more stable components and nutrient mobilizing fungal strains. It aims at closing nutrient cycles and sequestering C while improving soil biodiversity and keeping the yield gap of ecological farming as small as possible. The fertilizer will be characterized and tested in a controlled lab-experiment as well as in field experiments at three farms covering a broad range of agricultural landscapes in Baden-Württemberg, southern Germany. The applicant will apply biochemical as well as isotopic methods for the assessment of nutrient and C fluxes and pools in the soil-plant system.

Als UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe ist das nordfriesische Wattenmeer ein einzigartiges Ökosystem – und zugleich Relikt einer seit dem Mittelalter vom Menschen intensiv geprägten Kulturlandschaft. Durch Sturmfluten versanken weite Gebiete; ihre verborgenen Überreste wirken heute wie Zeitkapseln und bewahren wertvolles archäologisches Erbe. Die DFG-geförderte Forschungsgruppe FOR 5837 „Von Aufstieg und Untergang: Integrative Forschung zur Kulturlandschafts-entwicklung in der nordfriesischen Wattenmeerregion während der letzten zwei Jahrtausende“ zielt auf die multidisziplinäre Rekonstruktion der 1362 untergegangenen Küstenlandschaft Nordfrieslands. Für dieses Forschungsvorhaben vereint FOR 5837 in sieben Teilprojekten Forschende aus Archäologie, Geschichte, Geographie, Geologie, Geophysik und Mikrobiologie in enger interdisziplinärer  Zusammenarbeit. Beteiligt sind die JGU Mainz, die Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU), das Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA), das Archäologische Landesamt Schleswig-Holstein (ALSH) und das Niedersächsische Institut für historische Küstenforschung (NIhK).

Im Rahmen des Teilprojekts (TP) 6 soll untersucht werden, wie vergangene Landnutzungspraktiken die nordfriesische Wattenmeerregion beeinflusst haben. Zentral ist die Analyse von molekularen Biomarkern (z. B. Steroide, Gallensäuren, Triterpenen, Alkylresorzinolen) in historischen Böden mittels GC‑MS.

The newly funded Cluster of Excellence TERRA “Terrestrial Geo-Biosphere Interactions in a Changing World” is an interdisciplinary research initiative of geoscientists, biologists, and computer scientists at the Universities of Tübingen and Hohenheim and the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research in Frankfurt, investigating how the interactions between the living and non-living worlds shape global change from single microorganisms to the globe, in the geological past, at present, and in the future. It starts on January 1, 2026. We seek for 15 doctoral researchers in five coordinated Focus Unit Projects (FUNs) starting on April 1, 2026, lasting for 3.5 years.

The professorship focuses on plant nutrition in the context of sustainable agriculture and global environmental change. The ideal candidate uses integrative approaches, including molecular, greenhouse and field experiments, plant-soil system modeling, and state-of-the-art tools (e.g., isotopes, phenomics or genomics) to generate new knowledge on environment-crop interactions (in the rhizosphere and across scales). The candidate collaborates with stakeholders to provide solutions to improve nutrient use efficiency and sustainability of food and feed production across the globe. PhD position to study nitrogen fixation in mycorrhiza and forest soils

We are looking for a PhD student in biogeochemistry of forest soils with a focus on N₂ fixation in ectomycorrhizal tubercles. The objectives of the PhD project are to quantify N₂ fixation in ectomycorrhizal tubercles in relation to N₂ fixation by free-living microorganisms in Swedish forest soils, to understand the factors that influence the rate of N₂ fixation in tubercles, to identify the microorganisms that catalyse this process, as well as to better understand the structure of the mycorrhizal tubercles, and to upscale the N₂ fixation rates to larger spatial scales.

We offer an innovative research topic about a key ecosystem process and biological interactions as well as a very attractive research environment.
